Tesla Superchargers Can Now Be Used By Other Electric Cars: Here Is How It Works

I write about the automotive industry and where it is headed next.

Tesla now allows drivers of other electric cars to charge their batteries at its Supercharger stations.

Although only a small pilot project for now, the unlocking of the Supercharger network is a significant move for Tesla and the electric car market as a whole. While public charging networks from the likes of Ionity and Electrify America are improving, exclusive use of the Supercharger network has long been a major benefit of owning a Tesla.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has talked about opening up the network for years, and has previously said how the offer has been there for other manufacturers to access it, but none have done so. Now that is about to change.

Detailed in a blog post published by Tesla today (November 1), the pilot project will see 10 Supercharger stations in the Netherlands become accessible for other EVs. Drivers of these cars need to use the Tesla smartphone app (and make sure it is version 4.2.3 or higher). They then tap on the new 'Charge Your Non-Tesla' option and add a payment method to get started.

The pilot project is currently limited to EV owners who live in the Netherlands, rather than those who are visiting from another country, and Tesla drivers can continue to use the chargers as normal. It is also the case that Tesla drivers can use the same Tesla app to charge any other EVs they also own.

All Superchargers that are compatible with non-Tesla cars use the CCS connection, as is now commonplace on electric vehicles with fast-charging sold in Europe.

Tesla isn't saying exactly how much Supercharger access will cost drivers of other EVs. Instead, the company states: "Pricing for Non-Tesla drivers reflects additional costs incurred to support charging a broad range of vehicles and adjustments to our sites to accommodate these vehicles. Rates vary by site, and you can view charging prices in the Tesla app. The per kWh price to charge can be lowered with a charging membership."

The Supercharger stations available for all EVs are in the following Dutch locations:

  • Sassenheim
  • Apeldoorn Oost
  • Meerkerk
  • Hengelo
  • Tilburg
  • Duiven
  • Breukelen
  • Naarden
  • Eemnes
  • Zwolle

Tesla added: "It's always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to Non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric. This move directly supports our mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.

"More customers using the Supercharger network enables faster expansion. Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, while continuing to aggressively expand the network, so we can eventually welcome both Tesla and Non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide."
